Sea defence works involving the construction of a Gabion Rock Wall to protect a residential property in Seabank, Castlebellingham.

The scheme provided protection to a private residential property sitting less than five metres from the high water mark line in Dundalk Bay which is designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA).

Scope of works included;

  • Survey, reporting and monitoring of structural condition of the adjacent private property
  • Removal and disposal of existing temporary protection measures
  • Excavation for inclined Gabion wall in close proximity to private property
  • Supply and installation of wire mesh gabion baskets suitable for marine environment
  • Backfilling and reinstatement of grass lawn behind new sea defence
  • Environmental management of the works was tailored to respect and protect the qualifying criteria of the adjoining SAC and SPA zones
  • Safe working practices and risk assessment of operating in tidal conditions

The works were carried out under the Public Works Short Form of Contract PW-CF6.
