Coastal protection works involving the construction of a rock armour revetment south of Annagassan Village.

The scheme provided protection to a section of coastline adjacent to private residential properties in Dundalk Bay which is designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and
Special Protection Area (SPA).

The key elements of the project were;

  • Traffic and pedestrian management design and implementation
  • Excavation of toe 1m below beach level and grading for revetment construction
  • Supply and placement of 1500 tonnes of imported rock armour ranging in size 2-4 tonnes
  • Revetment constructed with minimum two rock crest overlying geotextile filter membrane
  • Environmental management of the works was tailored to respect and protect the qualifying criteria of the adjoining SAC and SPA zones
  • Safe working practices and risk assessment of operating in tidal conditions below the high water mark

The works were carried out under the Public Works Short Form of Contract PW-CF6.
