N1 Traffic Calming Scheme, Drogheda & Dundalk

The N1 is a national primary route and was formerly the main Dublin-Belfast road. It is now used as the main access route into both Drogheda and Dundalk, with speeding an issue on approaches to both towns.

The main elements of the project were;

  • Traffic and pedestrian management design and implementation on category 4 routes
  • Site investigation to locate existing fibre optics, power, water and telecoms services
  • Installation of public lighting and traffic signal ducting in the road and footpaths
  • Temporary and permanent trench reinstatements in roads and footpaths
  • Kerbing, concrete footpaths and central reserve refuge islands
  • Cold milling and re-surfacing of carriageway with hot rolled asphalt
  • Public lighting and traffic signal installations
  • Pedestrian guardrails, traffic signs and road-markings
  • Retaining wall construction and rendering

All traffic signs were mounted on frangible posts in accordance with Chapter 1 of the Traffic Signs Manual.
